Parental leave pay too generous: Barnett

TONY Abbott's paid parental leave scheme is overly-generous, West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says.

Mr Barnett - who the federal opposition leader said in February he wanted to model himself on - made the comment on Monday after welcoming road funding pledges from Mr Abbott over the weekend.

Under the controversial scheme - which has been labelled an unaffordable vote winner - mothers would get six months leave at their normal wage.

"I support paid parental leave ... (but) I think in many respects it probably is too generous," Mr Barnett told reporters.

"If Tony Abbott becomes prime minister and that scheme is introduced, we will co-operate in terms of the administration, but we will not be contributing money to the scheme ... as has been suggested."
